For this landed project in Jalan Pari Burong, the design calls for simplicity and subtle sophistication. To engage with the brief, lines play a part in offering a dramatic outlook with geometric shapes from the tall windows and high ceilings defining the space. A play on colours offers this sizeable apartment the lavish look with neutrals – with blacks and whites denoting this contemporary-styled interior. Darker wood is discerning against a neutral backdrop. Throughout, the mix of natural fibres and materials contributes to the soothing, down-to-earth vibe.
Use of Colours
Black and wood often combine to ground and define a contemporary-styled home. To seal this look, this home is characterised by neutrals, black and white, as well as wood grains. With walls painted in a basic neutral, the designer has a wonderful backdrop for bold accessories, which explains the occasional use of bright and bold colours.
Lines and Space
The most obvious and distinctive element of this interior design is the use of unfussy styling and easy lines. Architectural details such as high ceilings, bare windows, and geometric wall art and sculpture add to this well-balanced composition. Negative space, on walls, between pieces of furniture, and nearer the ceilings, is as important as the areas filled with objects since less is more in contemporary homes.
Contemporary Furniture Furniture should make a bold statement, but appear understated all at once – without ornate curves or decorous detailing. Smooth, clean, geometrical shapes help complete this evocative look. Upholstered furniture are clad in black, white, or other neutral tones, using textiles such as wool, cotton, linen, silk, jute to add textural appeal. Pillows add colours and textures to this composition. Sofas, chairs, and ottomans often feature exposed legs, while beds and chairs are usually void of skirtings, trims, fringes, or tassels. In essence, contemporary furniture features strong, bold lines without the frills. Light
Considerations and Art
Spotlights are directed at paintings, posters, or prints to draw the eye to accent pieces. Contemporary sculptures or artwork can be placed at eye level on structural column or pedestal to add interest to the space. Frames in high-gloss or matte black, natural wood, or metal finishes are a great way to dress walls. When several pieces are put together, hang them close together to achieve the feeling of one large piece instead of many small pieces. The designer ensures that the room is not overdressed with too many ornamental pieces to achieve an open, fluid interior.
Other Design Elements
The generous use of metal, stone, and opaque or clear glass works well in a contemporary-styled room. The designer adds heavily-textured fabrics in plain colours for window treatments, pillows, or rugs to soften the space and give it a welcoming feel. Here, two-tone prints are sometimes used to inject character and appeal.
